Wolf Caught On Trail Camera Enters California

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

A trail camera caught a photo of a Canadian Gray Wolf that has entered Northern California from Oregon. More than 700 miles away from where he was.

This wolf has been fitted with a collar and even has a name – OR-7. “OR-7 left the Imnaha pack in northeastern Oregon last September, shortly before the state put a death warrant on his father and a sibling for killing cattle.”

Here’s what an animal rights group out of Oregon had to say. “A conservation group has dubbed him Journey, a name picked from a list of entries sent by children as far away as Finland. Oregon Wild said it was part of an effort to make the wolf too famous to kill.”

“Journey is the most famous wolf in the world,” said Steve Pedery, conservation director of Oregon Wild. “It is not surprising that the paparazzi finally caught up with him.”

Politicians In Utah Are Preparing For Wolves

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

While there are wolves in Utah right now, having been confirmed by several Fish and Game officers and dozens of hunters who have spotted them in numerous places. Wolves haven’t been officially recognized in Utah yet. However this is open to debate because supposedly they’re protected under the Endangered Species Act in Utah. Right now though most sportsmen in Utah consider them just to be big coyotes or wild dogs.

But that could all change in January. Utah Senator. Alan Christensen, R-North Ogden is sponsoring a bill that will reclassify wolves as a game animal. Like bears or cougars. So Utah would have managed wolf hunts, much like Montana and Idaho.

They’re claiming that there are no established wolf packs in Utah right now. “We have transients that come in from other states from time to time, but we are not aware of any resident wolves or any breeding taking place in the state,” said Kevin Bunnell, wildlife section chief with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. However, over a dozen hunters have claimed to have seen as many as 7 wolves traveling together in certain areas in central Utah. This was also verified by wildlife officers.

This bill they say is being setup so that we can manage and kill wolves when they’re delisted.

We pulled this information from an article that was written by Amy Joi O’Donoghue for the Deseret News. The Deseret News is a popular newspaper in Utah. Here are some quotes from her article and our response to them. “Wolves have long been the nemesis of ranchers who bemoan livestock kills to the predator and big game hunters who dislike the competition.”

In response to your quotes Amy. Wolves are responsible for killing rancher’s livestock and damaging their way of life. Don’t take our word for it, watch this video and watch the ranchers tell you for themselves. Click here.

And lastly, yes, hunters don’t want competition from wolves. With wolves there is no competition, they will wipe out every big game animal in their path and leave nothing else. Simply ask people living in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. - Hunters Against PETA

A Big Win For Sportsmen! Wolves Are Delisted In The Western Great Lakes

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

This is an email from Ryan Benson at Big Game Forever. Thanks for the update guys.

Western Great Lake Wolves delisted today!

Folks,

Huge breaking news today. Wolves are now officially delisted in the Western Great Lakes. Interior Secretary Salazar made the announcement this morning. The delisting rule takes affect in 30 days. Wisconsin plans to start managing wolves on February 1, 2012. We are waiting from official announcements from Minnesota and Michigan as well.

Another very important aspect of the delisting is that USFWS has rejected arguments that two species of wolves exist in the Western Great Lakes. What this means is that all wolves can be managed without complications that could result from two different wolf species designations.

The publication of this delisting rule does not stop litigation challenges to the Western Great Lakes delisting. Watch for any legal challenges to the delisting in coming weeks that could stop management actions in Wisconsin, Michigan or Minnesota.

However, this is another important step forward that deserves our support. More importantly it confirms what Big Game Forever and sportsmen all over America have been saying. Wolves are not endangered. It is now time for states to be able to manage their wolf populations.
